HIghlander Pattern Rector,
How it Works
German Highlander is a 1v1 format akin to both legacy and EDH. It has its own banlist similar that of legacy's, yet also allows some powerful vintage-only cards such as Demonic Tutor and Tolarian Academy. Each deck must have a minimum of 100 cards with only one of each, except for basic lands. It plays with the regular Magic rules, except you have one free mulligan. The format's website is Highlandermagic.info.
Pattern-Rector is an archetype that usually has two ways of winning: either the core combo built around Protean Hulk - which I will describe below - or by beating with efficient creatures. The biggest upside is that the two strategies aren't mutually exclusive, meaning you often have two possible angles of attack.
You need one of the several sacrifice outlets with at least one other creature and Academy Rector.
Sac Rector, get Pattern of Rebirth attached to your expendable creature. Note that the aura doesn't target as it isn't cast, and thus if Rector's trigger resolves there isn't a worry that the creature would be destroyed.
Sac the creature with Pattern, get Protean Hulk.
Sac Protean Hulk. Get Karmic Guide, a 1 CMC sac outlet (just in case) and Dryad Arbor while you're at it. Karmic Guide's trigger returns Protean Hulk.
Sac Hulk, get Saffi Eriksdotter and some value creatures. I often opt for Tidehollow Sculler and Spellskite. As with Fiend Hunter and Leonin Relic-Warder, you can sac/bounce/destroy the Sculler in response to its ETB trigger. This way the LTB trigger resolves first, going nothing, and then the ETB trigger resolves for a more permanent effect.
Sac Saffi targeting Karmic Guide, after which you sac Guide to get another ETB trigger returning (you guessed it) Hulk.
Sac Hulk, get Reveillark and whichever 1 CMC creature you wish.
Sac Karmic Guide, then sac Reveillark, returning Saffi and Karmic Guide. Guide's trigger once again returns Hulk.
Sac Hulk, get a creature with an abusable ETB/LTB trigger such as Acidic Slime, Thragtusk or Voice of Resurgence. Or all of them.
Saf Saffi targeting Guide, sac Guide, return Reveillark, sac Guide, sac Reveillark, return Saffi and Guide, return Reveillark with Guide.
Now you have your whole team in play: a good ETB/LTB creature, Saffi, Reveillark and Karmic Guide. You can sacrifice Saffi targeting the value creature, sac that creature, then sac Guide and then Reveillark and do it as many time as needed.
