Vicious Traps (Rate for Rate),
How it Works
Description of Deck:
The main idea of this deck is to force the other guy to keep as full a hand as possible and play lots of eldrazi spawn. Then, play vicious shadows and sacrifice the eldrazi spawn, which go to the graveyard before being removed, triggering vicious shadows' ability, and generally win like that (yes, according to the comprehensive rules, this DOES work). Howling mine and font of mythos both keep the other guy's hand full, and provide enough draw power for you to draw your win conditions. Runeflare trap is an alternate win condition, although you generally need to draw two to win. Fog, maelstrom pulse, and terminate simply there to keep you alive long enough to win.
Took 2 terminate and 1 font of mythos out of mainboard. Replaced with 3 fog. Fog has been getting sideboarded in against too many matchups for it to stay out: it's needed against Jund, Next Level Bant, and Mythic. Replaced volcanic fallout with comet storm - 3 in main and 1 in side. That card has proven to be a beast in this deck.
The early reports that it went 4-1 or 5-1 against Jund were based on faulty playtesting. I didn't realize it at the time, but the people I played against didn't really know how to play Jund. Current record (after changes) is 8-6. So it wins slightly over half the time. It gets difficult if they have thought hemorrhage though.
This also went 7-6 against Next Level Bant. Vengevine < Ready supply of chump blockers.
Against mythic it's 5-7. The fast eldrazi conscription is hard to deal with, especially on a flier.
4-7 against RDW. Still can't deal with that speed.
2-2 against turboland. Can't form too many conclusions about it, although turboland did screw itself against this deck once, because I somehow milled it out.
5-5 against UWcontrol. The addition of eldrazi monument gives me too many win conditions for them to successfully control against every time, but they often kick my ass anyway.
Added temple bell to fix consistency issues.
