Zombie deck basics? 3/24/2012 2:50:49 PM

New guy trying to learn

What is the basic idea of a zombie deck, is it cheap creatures that come out fast? is it play cards from the graveyard?

I'm trying to learn, I'm new here

i don' know if i will get resistance on this one but i feel with all the zombie cards out there you have a pretty open end idea on doing whatever you want with zombies. i have my deck set up where its a b/u/g where i really rely on tokens with parallel lives and token cards like army of the damned and endless ranks of the dead, but tokens arent always enough so i try and boost the tokens with creatures that boost zombies like diregraf captain and cemetery reaper. i tend not to have gravepull as a main component for that deck since tokens dont go to the grave so, but i do have some cards like zombie apocalypse just to be on the safe side. card like overrun can help too for token decks since you are just trying to mass up a huge token army to overwhelm the opponent(s). but that is just a long winded way to say just look at your cards and play around with something that works for you.

Agreed, Zombies can be almost any kind of deck now, from token swarm to graveyard recursion to fatties to mill. Most classic zombie decks, at least that I've seen, are more of the fast-creature horde until something big comes out, such as the black mikeaus or geth, with a lot of graveyard creature recursion.

Quoting arsonicpretorian:...i feel with all the zombie cards out there you have a pretty open end idea on doing whatever you want with zombies...

This is true. It's actually you (as the owner and developer of your deck) who determines the main theme of your Zombie deck. You may have your Zombies attack together in a Tribal Deck, play undead tricks in a Reanimation Deck, or outplay your opponent in a Mill Deck. It's you who will choose which Zombies to include in your deck and how would these Zombies function together into one main goal. You have to choose your main theme very well.

Meanwhile, you may want to look at some Zombie decklists made by Magic players in the past, and try to craft your main deck theme out of these decklists.

I found that making a competitive tribal zombie deck in legacy nearly killed me! By far the hardest deck to master for me so far. Good luck.

The key for me in the end was not sticking to mono-black no matter how tempting it seems. Zombie Tribal card synergy I love, and which made my deck: Ghoulcaller's Chant Buy/Lord of the Undead Buy and Nameless Inversion Buy/Sedraxis Alchemist Buy/Gempalm Polluter Buy; Lich Lord of Unx Buy and Mistvein Borderpost Buy to make Sedraxis Alchemist Buy tick, and Undead Warchief Buy as a game winner (he is a poor man's Vampire Nocturnus Buy).
