Coming back into MTG - running mono-black | 3/28/2012 1:30:41 PM |

Hi All, I'm jumping with both feet back into the world of M:TG and was hoping for a little bit of guidance. I stopped playing in high school, so late '90s. At that point I had been to one DCI tournament and failed pretty hard-core. When I was in College my younger brother and his friends stole and sold most of my good cards, so I'm re-building my collection. I've been playing casually with co-workers at lunch and some friends on the weekends. One of the shops I've found hosts casual games on Thursday nights that I'm going to start attending. Here's my black deck as is: http://www.essentialmagic.com/Decks/View.asp?ID=923593 I also have a mono-red deck that's heading toward the "red deck win" structure and a green/white deck that I built for my wife since she likes life-gain and the creatures. I haven't posted those, and the mono-black (linked above) is probably my strongest right now. I feel like that mono-black deck is teetering between being defined and not clearly defined. It's halfway between a creature kill deck and a vampire deck and a life-gain deck (3 halves... oops). Should I think about removing the Royal Assassins altogether? I do like how they tend to stall the game for just enough time to get the land/dark rituals for me to start bringing other things out. Any advice is welcome. Thanks all! Edited P.S. - there are some cards that I've only put 1 of. I'm hoping that with Liliana Vess Buy, Demonic Tutor Buy, and 2x Rune-Scarred Demon Buy, I can tutor them up.

Thanks for the views so far. I'd love to hear any comments or advice. It's intended for casual play, and illegal in all tournament formats.

made some updates - took out a few cards and evened it out a bit. Still not balanced but getting there. Any comments welcome, but I'm assuming the silence is just "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." It's winning about 75% in my casual group at the moment, but has a very high mana curve.

It looks good to me, have you found a need to use such big flyers? With the assissian in there you should be able to do enough damage to win without spending so much mana allowing you to get your creatures out sooner and get the job done faster, just a thought, give it a try and let us know how it works. have a look at mine if you like. http://www.essentialmagic.com/decks/View.asp?ID=925493

Thanks for the comment! I couldn't see your deck - maybe you haven't made it public yet? The big fliers are there more for their abilities than combat. There are probably much cheaper ways to get there, but I figured a for the Rune-Scarred Demon Buy, I have it for the tutor ability but having a 6/6 Flier at the same time isn't too shabby. The Reiver Demon Buy is a fun win card when I can wipe out an opposing player's creatures (I take him out if I'm 1vs1 against black).
