Counters to Draw/Go Control and Token 5/31/2012 8:29:28 PM

I have started recently to play MTGO and have been trying out standard. It seems like, at least in casual MTGO games, almost every game is either versus a token deck or a u/w or u/b control deck.

I have tried many different decks, and I have not found very many ways to deal with either of these decks. For control decks, I have considered some cards such as Thrun, the last troll, which immediately seems useful against control, but control decks run almost exclusively nontargeted creature kill such as Black Sun's Zenith Buy, Tribute to Hunger Buy, Geth's Verdict Buy, and Day of Judgment Buy. For the same reason of heavy creature kill, cards like Grand Abolisher Buy have not seemed particularly useful because they are just another dead creature. Because of the immense amount of draw in these decks and recycling of cards between Black Sun's Zenith Buy and Snapcaster Mage Buy, it is very difficult to outlast a counter deck compared to formats in the past.

In addition, I have been really struggling against token decks, which is a real tragedy considering how common these are. Lingering Souls Buy is basically an autowin against any deck from what I've seen. The few cards I have found that help a bit against token decks such as Ratchet Bomb Buy and Sever the Bloodline Buy cannot outlast the onslaught of 3/3 vigilance tokens that get put into play with each spell due to all the pump enchantments.

I know I am basically asking about two completely different decks here, but I am at a loss as to how to deal with these decks. Both have a ton of staying power against anything I throw at them, and I am starting to feel like it is just to the point of "if you can't beat them, join them". I have had lots of fun playing beatdown decks with colors like g/w in the past or g/b rock decks, and I just cannot find any way to make a deck like that work against these two common decktypes.

I don't know if this is a help to you or not but when your opponents repeatadly make the game about you answering them you need to turn that around. Play a deck that makes it not, "If I don't top deck X I Lose." Make your opponent think "If he top decks Y he wins!" It usually means playing combo or a deck that fights from a totally different angle. Since in standard the only combos I can think of are easy to break (see below) then it must be some other route. For instance the Grand Architect Aggro deck is interesting as it plays out so fast other peoples goals are to NOT die from 3 wurmcoil engines. Wolf Run has innevitability with a Kessig Wolf Run Buy. That is the kind of game you want them to play. The game where they have to stop YOU.

I would guess your playing Aggro of some kind as your being disrupted by kill spells. It might just not be the time for aggro. If you keep at it try things out like Manabarbs Buy or simply make a deck that is anti control. If your format is delvery try out Naya Aggro, Naya Pod or Zombie Pod. Or maybe just try R/G aggro and put some Thundermaw Hellkite Buy / Hellrider Buy to punish your opponent the moment he is weak.

Those are just some theories though.

You could try one though, these are the ones off the top of my head:

Infinite Life
Seraph Sanctum + Restoration Angel Buy + Restoration Angel Buy + Fiend Hunter Buy

Seraph Sanctum + Restoration Angel Buy + Fiend Hunter Buy + Fiend Hunter Buy

Infinite Damage
Heartless Summoning Buy + Havengul Lich Buy + Priest of Urabrask Buy + Perilous Myr Buy

Lock Down
Stonehorn Dignitary Buy + Venser, the Sojourner Buy / Mimic Vat Buy

Take control of all permanents during each players upkeep
Gilded Lotus Buy + Zealous Conscripts Buy + Deadeye Navigator Buy
