Sphere of the Suns Buy I was playing at FNM and, i played this card, it entered the field tapped normally, but i didnt have any dice or anything to put charge counters on it when i tapped it for mana, i said ''i remove one counter, adding a red mana, now it has 2 counters'' and i played a titan couple turns later, i tapped the sphere for the second time saying ''im removing another counter, adding a red mana'' and my opponent didnt let me add the mana, he said ''i dont see any charge counters on it, therefore it has no charge counters for me'' i told him i didnt have anything to mark it, and he was like ''thats ur problem'' and insisted that my sphere had no charge counters anymore, even tho i have used it once on that same game. so do i REALLY have to bring papers/dice for those things? I mean, its obvious to do it if i have a deck with plenty charge counters on many cards etc, but that was the only card on the table with that ability i told him he needs to pay attention on the cards i have on the table, instead of ''tricking'' that on a tight situation, even though i already used the sphere once, that means i can still use it two more times

Next time, ask around and try to borrow a die or something from one of the other players. If all else fails, it should be possible to find a piece of scrap paper in the store; simply tear three pieces off of that and put them on the Sphere as counters. Two thoughts here... One. If it's several turns later, and you have cast several spells in those turns (we don't know, because your post didn't provide enough detail), it's quite possible that your opponent genuinely thought that you had used up the counters by now. Two. If he wasn't confused, that sounds like a very good time to apply the "don't be a jerk!" rule. Your opponent apparently had no problems with there being no visible representation of counters when you first used the Sphere, so this sounds like he needs a stern talking to about how rules lawyering and acting like a jerk are not the type of behavior we want at tournaments; especially not at low-level ones that prioritize fun. Both players are responsible for making sure the game state is clear and understood. So if at any time he starts getting confused about the number of counters on your Sphere, he needs to speak up, so you both, potentially with the help of a judge, can work to clarify things. If he lets you use the Sphere once initially and then later argues as you said he did, even though he's fully aware there should still be two counters on it, that's Cheating and should get him disqualified, even at an FNM. (In reality this probably won't happen too often, though, because because the Head Judge needs to be reasonably certain this is the case, and the general reluctance to DQ somebody seems to be higher at "fun" FNMs than at more competitive events.) Well, you really should have pen and paper with you anyways to record yuor life totals. I'm aware that many people simply use dice for that, but dice are "insecure"; they'll roll over when somebody bumps the table or brushes them with a card or their shirt sleeve. Writing down life totals is much safer. And once you're in the habit of having some sort of notepad with you, you can easily create counters, either by tearing scraps off, or by putting a little note on the Sphere on which you write the number of counters. No. As I said, you're both responsible for making sure the game state is clear. If you're the one playing with cards that use counters, it is your responsibility to be able to represent those counters in a way that is clear to both players. (That is not an excuse for the kind of behavior you described, but you also cannot simply say "oh, I happen to not have any way to mark counters, so you'll just have to remember everything".) _____________________________________ DCI Lvl 2 Judge e-Tags: [card]Golgari Guildmage[/card] = Golgari Guildmage Buy
