Niblis of the Breath?? | 6/20/2012 6:13:06 PM |

Okay so my friend and I were playing a casual game, and he had two of the said creatures (Niblis of the Breath) on his side of the field. Anytime I would summon a creature (the second they touched the field) he would use the tap ability to make them tapped. Now what I am wondering is if he would be able to play them the second they reach the field. I don't know if he would have priority to do it. Any thoughts would be great ![]()

During your turn, you have priority after every spell/ability resolves. In other words, if your creature just resolved, you get priority again until you pass priority. I suspect that doesn't answer any further questions about the scenario that you might have. If so, please describe what exact actions are you asking about. Furthermore, you can read more about "priority" and the "stack" in the comprehensive rule book. --- "I have returned."

The reason I had a suspicion is that there's few cases when the answer to your question actually matters for game play. Regardless of who has priority, if his ability is activated it does not resolve immediately and you will both get a chance to take more action before that. --- "I have returned."

He can't respond to the creature entering the battlefield and make it enter the battlefield tapped, if that's what you are asking. Players can only respond to spells or abilities on the stack, and you receive priority first immediately after your creature enters the battlefield during your turn. Neither can they stop you activating an ability with in the cost by tapping it in response, because they cannot respond to the action of tapping a creature that was tapped as payment of a cost. Eg, if your creature had a ability and Haste, you could activate its ability before they even get a chance to activate Niblis of the Breath Buy, and you would also get a chance to respond to the Niblis of the Breath Buy ability. However, even if your creature has Haste, he does still get a chance to stop it attacking by tapping it with the Niblis of the Breath Buy ability. You can't declare your creature as an attacker without giving them a chance to activate the ability before declaring attackers (both when you pass priority with an empty stack to try and end your pre-combat main phase, and again in the beginning of combat step of the combat phase). Your opponent cannot respond to creatures that you declare as attackers, they must target which creatures to tap with Niblis of the Breath Buy before you announce your attackers. Once you have declared attackers, the attackers are tapped on the spot - tapping them again with Niblis of the Breath Buy has no effect. - HZ DCI MTG Rules Advisor
