Help this blue deck | 7/23/2012 9:35:48 PM |

My wife and I started playing MTG about a year and a half ago, very casual, amongst a small group of friends. I tweaked her blue deck to try and make it more competitive, but I know it could be better. (Has a hard time against some of our more serious player friends) I'd rather not run out and spend $20 on new cards, so I'd like to start off with improving things based on my current collection of blues. This deck: http://essentialmagic.com/Decks/View.asp?ID=930488 Can it be made better swapping out any of these?: http://essentialmagic.com/Collections/SearchResults.asp?ID=98113&CardSet=+&Color=2&Rarity=+&Sort=Rarity+DESC&Sort=CardName%2CCardVersion&Sort=Price&FilterByOwnedWanted=on&OwnedWanted=Owned&OwnedWantedCompare=%3E%3D&NumberOwnedWanted=1&ViewAs=Grid&Search=++Begin+Search++ I was already thinking of taking out a few things like Call to Mind and adding some more creatures. I'm also in process of making a blue/white spirits deck, so any spirit cards in my collection are currently spoken for. Any comments appreciated! Thanks in advance

I have seen the deck, and I recognized its several strengths and weaknesses. In this regard, I would like to suggest some things which you may consider to build an efficient deck. 1) Try to limit your "card pool" by assigning an arbitrary format for your deck. You might want to build a Blue creature-based deck under the Standard format, or maybe Extended, Modern, or Legacy. 2) Also assign a Secondary Deck Theme for your Blue Deck. It's easy to look for creatures that could fit into your deck, but it's quite challenging to pick out those with similar abilities or characteristics. Your Blue creatures might have the same creature type, same features (like bouncing or tapping opponent creatures), or same abilities such as flying, drawing cards, among others. Your creatures must have synergy among themselves. 3) Lastly, you must have an alternative way to arrive at the victory. Of course your main route is through dealing combat damage using your creatures. However, you need some ways to prevent your opponents from winning while you slowly seize the game. Examples are the synergy of Runechanter's Pike Buy with your instant and sorcery spells, and also the beatdown potential of huge creatures like Quicksilver Gargantuan Buy. I hope these thoughts may help and enlighten build a solid and strong Blue creature-based deck. Good Luck. Have a Nice Day!
