No one is really going to care much about what I have to say, but I have a guilt-thorn that's been stuck in my side for years I want to "get off my chest". Roughly 10 years ago, I chatted a lot via PM with another user on EM by the name of Hephem. I had this idea of an Elf deck I wanted to build IRL and he had an idea for a Cleric deck he wanted to build IRL. I was unemployed and living with my father who could barely support my brother & I. So I was desperate to build this Elf deck, but couldn't, because I was broke. Hephem kindly and generously decided to mail me, all the way from Europe to me in the states, 7 of the cards I needed (And I was only 13 cards short), which included 2 Staff of Domination and 2 Priest of Titania. That was only under the verbal stipulation that if I ever came across some of the Clerics he needed, that I'd return the favor. Well, as it turns out, the list of Clerics he needed were pretty hard to come by, much more than the Elves I needed. And so I never came by any and never got to return the favor. About a year later, his account went inactive and I haven't had contact with him since. So this thread goes out as a ten-year-anniversary thanks to a stranger that mailed a gift to a poor young adult me almost halfway across the globe. I still feel guilty for having never returned the favor, so I figured the least I can do is express my gratitude one more time.

Blockinlick, Sorry for my late reply. I read your post a while ago, but I have been delaying my answer for different reasons. I decided to make a short come back to magic, to build this strong cleric deck that I never built. This comeback was mainly motivated because of the new clerics that came out in the recent formats. However I am struggling to build it, mainly because I have currently no experience in MtG, and because I have no way to test how well a deck does without first buying the cards (that I do not want to buy without being sure that I want them in the first place)... yes a vicious circle... Plus, the lack of good opinions and advices is not helping... I came up with this B/W Cleric deck, comprising the clerics I like, and it seems to do pretty well when I test it out in ESsential Magic as well as in other platforms. Check it out! As for our story, I couldn’t possibly remember that anymore. I actually read some of your comments of your left in some of my decks, that showed to me that we were supporting each other. But I didn’t remember that I actually sent to you any card at all. But while thinking about it, I do remember putting your cards in an envelope and bringing the latter to the post office. My first love letter lol I sent to you those cards because I knew that, even if you wouldn’t find or send any cleric back to me, I wouldn’t possibly need the cards I sent to you: I was never a Elf guy. So I was not really incurring any risk, and to help others (specially without any risk) is within my philosophy. I hope that those cards helped you finishing your deck, and that you found the remaining missing cards. Maybe one day, a decade from now, you will bring your deck with you to Europe and we will play against one another. Meanwhile, I will be around. Thanks for your warm post. All the best Blockinlick. Take care. ![]()

Hot damn you two! This is truly a touching post. Not to steal the thunder from your comment, Blockinlick, but you two have made the fire burn hotter reinvigorated my enthusiasm for version 6 of eM. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I don't play much anymore. I still like Magic and still have my entire collection (12,000 cards). But nowdays I work a full-time job, have a wife, and 3-year-old daughter. Not a lot of time for Magic and there are countless other ventures and games I'm interested in as well. I can never really decide what I want to stick with in my limited spare time. Always moving on to the next thing or briefly returning to an old nostalgic thing. I did finish the Elf deck about a year later and it's as good and better than I ever thought. For example I actually took it to a local legacy tourney years ago (It actually had its own ban list) and it absolutely murdered my first two opponents. However, it got blown up by Jitte in the 3rd round. I put up a good fighting chance against it though, by using three of my Moment's Peace Buy and Flashbacks lol. In one game, I destroyed a Jitte with Naturalize, but they just played another one and I lost. The other game, same thing, but they countered my Gleeful Sabotage to kill the 2nd Jitte. Yeah, I don't have a very good opinion of Jitte lol. I'd have probably swept that tourney if it weren't for those meddling Jittes! When playing with my friends over the years, it's practically undefeated (With a few acceptable losses to a friends burn deck). To put it in perspective, a couple years ago, my friend Josh held a Magic get-together with like 8 people. Everyone was debating over who, between me and this other Josh guy (Josh2) had the best decks. Josh1 (My friend) boasted that there's no comparison. That my Elf deck alone would beat all the others. So we held a 3v3, one side using my decks, the other using Josh2's decks. I used my Modern-legal Artifact Affinity deck, Josh1 used my Elf deck (As he requested), and another friend Cody used my Aggro/Burn deck. Cody got eliminated quickly, but I held off the other 3 all by myself while Josh got the Elf deck primed, and the elves took them all out in one turn by swinging with 3 Heedless Ones pumped up over 80/80. It's my favorite deck by far. And if you remember, you were the one that introduced me to Artifact Affinity (My second favorite) as well. I took that idea and ran with it IRL when I got my first job. I actually have over 30 decks now. I'm a tinkerer and now I prefer limited formats like Pre-Release tourneys, booster and cube drafts. It's sad that my 30+ decks sit around in a big white 5-row box, but I'm always up for some games when a friend calls for it. Do Magic Workstation and Apprentice not work anymore? Or is the community just too dead? I haven't used either in a long time. If they're no longer good options, maybe you could paper-proxy (Print them in paper and put them in thicker sleeves) just for testing? (I hope such a thing isn't banned for discussion here). I've never done that, but I always just used MWS for that.

Wow. This kind of story is part of what makes essential magic such as special corner of the internet. I suspect a lot of us were youths/young adults near the height of the site, and the camaraderie formed was real ![]() --- "I have returned."
