Budget Building: Episode 4 - Artifice

by Kevin Weber

Magus of the Future

Replace Mishra with Magus of the Future in that last equation and what do you get?  Yep, that's right, the same thing: Draw your entire library for free.  After all, if you play the top, you can tap it to draw a card and place it atop your library.  The Magus lets you replay it from the topdeck, and Cloud Key makes it free.  Repeat as much as you like.  It's another "{0}: Draw a card."

Now, all four of these cards have great synergy with each other.  In fact, any three of these are phenomenal and will probably spell an instant win (assuming the deck's built right.)  I've already covered two of the four 3-card combos - what about the other two?

Magus of the Future + Mishra, Artificer Prodigy + Cloud Key

As long as the top of your library is either a {1} cost artifact or a {2}+ artifact that nets mana, you can keep playing and shuffling your library, hopefully until a Divining Top lays on top (in which case you simply draw everything for free.)

This of it this way - you play out a Rakdos Signet for {1}, and Mishra fetches a second.  You spend a second mana and chain them together, netting {R}{B}{B} - a gain of 1 mana.  Mishra shuffled your library, so if there's an artifact as your top (revealed) card, you can play it and repeat the process.  If not, you can play one from your hand to get another reshuffle.  Keep going until (hopefully) a Divining Top is placed on top of your library, which will win you the game.

Magus of the Future + Mishra, Artificer Prodigy + Sensei's Divining Top

This might seem, at first blush, to be just the same as Mishra + Divining Top.  After all, if you're picturing chaining two Divining Tops together to draw cards left and right, the fact that you can play a Top from your library doesn't help out in any way.  However, there's a different use for the top.  Imagine the following situation:

You have all three out.  You play a Rakdos Signet for {2}.  Mishra fetches a second copy.  Spend a third mana to chain them together, generating {R}{R}{B} - the same amount you started with.  If you want, you can use the Divining Top to rearrange the top three cards of your library (and if one of them is Cloud Key, you're set.)  Otherwise just put an artifact (such as another signet) on top and play it.  Mishra fetches the second and shuffles your library.  Repeat until you find what you need.  Once you find Cloud Key, you can draw the contents of your deck.

So, in short, what are the 2 and 3 card interactions:

Any Combination of Three:
Hopefully, be able to draw your entire deck.

Magus of the Future + Mishra, Artificer Prodigy: Whenever there's a mana producing artifact at the top of your deck, you can play it for free (assuming you include the right ones.)  You can keep repeating until you can't play the top card of your library.  Also, you can play an artifact from hand to achieve a shuffle effect.

Magus of the Future + Cloud Key: Whenever there's a mana producing artifact at the top of your deck, you can play it for free (assuming you include the right ones.)  Unlike the previous combo, though, you cannot achieve a shuffle effect by playing something from your hand.

Magus of the Future + Sensei's Divining Top: Together, they read "{1}: Draw a card"

Mishra, Artificer Prodigy + Cloud Key: A bad combination.  While you can play pretty much anything for free in your hand, there's no sort of draw or filtering.

Mishra, Artificer Prodigy + Sensei's Divining Top: Together, they read "{1}: Draw a card".  Also, unlike Magus + Top, you can actively search for a missing piece by using the top's first ability to rearrange the top three cards of your library.  If it's there, you can draw it instantly; if not, you can replay the top to shuffle your library (Magus won't let you shuffle.)

Cloud Key + Sensei's Divining Top: Another bad combination.  While you can play things on the cheap, there's no sort of draw (although there's at least minor filtering from the Top.)
